Great Northern Railway in Marias Pass - Cover
The Great Northern Railway in Marias Pass
This 128-page 6” x 9” hardcover book contains over 200 B&W images illustrating in detail the history and operations of the Great Northern
and Burlington Northern in Marias Pass from the1890s thru the 1990s.
Montana's Marias Pass is the lowest rail crossing through the Rocky Mountains. The tracks snake through narrow canyons, traverse the swift Middle Fork of the Flathead River, and twist through numerous snowsheds and tunnels to crest the 5,213-foot Continental Divide.

James Jerome Hill was the driving force behind Great Northern Railway's mission to find the most economical route to the Pacific coast,
with surveyor John F. Stevens taking a major role in locating the pass. Browning is the eastern gateway into Marias Pass as the railroad approaches the Rocky Mountain Front; continuing west from Summit,
the tracks parallel Bear Creek and the Middle Fork of the Flathead River downgrade through Essex to Glacier National Park and the Flathead Valley.
Here's are a few customer comments:
“Just wanted to let you know that your Great Northern Railway in Marias Pass book arrived in today's mail. I look forward to reading the book
and enjoying the photos. The book will bring back happy memories of a trip on the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago with a stopover at Essex to stay at the Izaak Walton Inn and to visit Glacier National Park”.
“Excellent book! Bravo for Arcadia Press and the new Images of Rail series.
This book has photos from the 1890s to BNSF era. I have all the Great Northern, Burlington Northern and BNSF picture books and this one
[even though it is B&W] covers the Pass the best and I've learned some interesting details I didn't know.”
